The waterproof backing is great for using at parks in the morning when there's still dew on the grass. The padded lining gives the mat a more comfortable feel for my toddler to roll around & play. We leave the mat open on our floor all the time now because my toddler loves it. Only downside is the mat is a little hard to fold up. You have to really fold it tight so that the velcro parts can stick.
